The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday dismissed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's false allegations that he owed his position on an agreement with China.
According to The Times and the Daily Telegraph, Pompeo told a private meeting of lawmakers on Tuesday that the WHO had become a political body, accusing its decision of being influenced by the agreement. That clashed between President Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and China, which helped him become president.
Asked about Pompeo's allegations in a video conference, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said they were "untrue and unacceptable and baseless."
"The WHO is focused on saving lives," he insisted. "The WHO will not be disturbed by these comments and we do not want the entire international community to be distracted."
He reiterated that one of the biggest threats in the current crisis is "the politicalization of the epidemic."
Tedros called on all countries to work together to fight the virus, which has claimed more than 627,000 lives worldwide since it first appeared in China late last year.
"Kovid 19 does not respect the boundaries of ideology or political parties," he warned, warning that "politics and partisanship have made things worse."
Tedros has faced relentless verbal attacks from US President Donald Trump on the WHO in response to the 19-year-old Kovid and accused the organization of being bought by China. From AFP
