Russia's largest newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, is under investigation after a sexual harassment case was leaked by author Elizaveta Kirpanova.
Last week, the abducted woman released sexual harassment statistics to 12 different media organizations and accused them of misconduct.
Kirpanova is a 23-year-old reporter who has been working for more than a year for the popular and well-respected Novaya Gazeta in the Russian press.
Discussions over her lawsuit led to the resignation of editor-in-chief Ivan Kolpakov, who spoke to her at a staff party last year and was accused of harassment.
He was described as abusive to young female employees, a case that became the first sexually sensitive case to be fully exposed in Russia. The country's small, independent journalists are united in writing. Kirpanova says that while she was waiting to leave, the editor asked if he could hug her to relieve stress.
In an interview last week, Kirpanova recalled, "I hugged him for a second and started to back off, but he still hugged me, so I pushed him away but he dared to kiss me on the lips. My heart beats very fast. I collected my belongings and left! ”
This happened eighteen months ago. So far, Kirpanova has come out to share stories publicly after dozens of young women and men began airing stories of harassment at work.
Psychological abuse, in some cases leading to rape, is actually said to have occurred.
"Things are happening here #MeToo, but no one is doing anything about it," said Valentina Dekhtyarenko, 25, who works for Mikhail Khodorkovsky's overseas pro-democracy movement. "There has been a great deal of silence under the abuse that has been going on for years, and it is finally over now when we agree to speak," she wrote on her Twitter account.
Last week's flood on social media also revealed several similar cases.
"The newspaper asked me if I wanted him fired," Kirpanova said. I am not a supporter of sentencing measures! I support more educational measures! ”
