UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Tuesday on military coup in Myanmar, called by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres This one.
The British ambassador to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, is chairing the council this month and said on Monday that the council would review measures to support the winning November 8 presidential election. By Aung San Suu Kyi's party will ensure the release of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and other leaders arrested by the military.
"At the moment we do not have a specific idea of what those measures are," Woodward said. At the UN, however, those measures are meant to be sanctions.
Meanwhile, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the global body could not contact officials in Myanmar and there was no information about those arrested.
Dujarric says the United States is concerned that military action could worsen the situation for the remaining 600,000 Rohingya in northern Rakhine state, including 120,000 people trapped. Commune in the camp as well.
