On Thursday, an Indonesian youth was beaten 146 times for child abuse, a public beating that is a simple punishment for anyone who dares to violate Islamic law in Aceh province.
The 19-year-old (name withheld) showed a very hurt face as a police officer, clothed and blindfolded, beat him with a whip. At the same time, he asked for the suspension to be suspended so that nearby doctors could treat the wounded before the punishment began.
He was arrested in early 2020 on charges of child abuse and abuse and was convicted of 146 lashes, one of the most serious crimes.
Aceh, in the western tip of Sumatra, is the only region in Indonesia where the majority of Muslims strictly enforce the law. And the crimes that can be charged and punished with whipping include gambling, alcohol, adultery and other crimes, as well as premarital sex.
Recently, two other men, aged 40 and 21, were also beaten 100 times for having sex with a minor.
