India has successfully test-fired a supersonic ballistic missile (SMART) system as it seeks to boost its anti-submarine warfare capabilities in response to China's growing presence in the region.
The Indian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the SMART weapons system conducted a test flight in India on Monday morning from Wheeler Island off the east coast of Odisha. The launch was successful at all stages as the missile reached its desired height and fired without incident.
"These launches and demonstrations are important in building submarine combat capabilities," the ministry said. "Meanwhile, the SMART anti-submarine weapon system has gone far beyond its normal range."
India has been pumping resources into its military modernization as well as promoting domestic research and development and arms production amid recent clashes with Chinese and Pakistani forces over disputed Kashmir.
The launch comes after the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test-fired an anti-tank missile (ATGM) within two weeks.
