Hot! Thailand's new top general guarantees no more coups

BANGKOK: The Kingdom of Thailand has the largest number of coups in the world, but the newly-appointed Thai army chief has claimed that there will be no more coups.

General Chalermpol Srisawat, the new chief of staff of the Thai army, has vowed that Thailand will not have another coup, promising that all troops will not be involved in politics. All troops are obliged for national defense only. The commander-in-chief made the announcement on the 44th anniversary of the massacre at Thammasat University. This was the hottest event in Thai politics during 1976.

According to Wikipeda, Thailand has staged 12 coups since its first coup in 1932, ending nearly 800 years of dictatorship. But the last coup took place in May 2014, led by General Prayuth Chan-o-cha, who is currently the Thai Prime Minister. Many military officials are currently serving as senators in Thailand. However, Srisawat did not comment on the positions of the military officers in politics.

So far, six Senate seats have been reserved for the top commanders of the Thai army, including the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defense, the national police chief, the chief of the army, the chief of the navy and the chief of the air force. These senior armed officers are Thai senators. 104 out of 250 senators are military or police officers.

Newly-appointed Thai Chief of Staff Srisawat said in a meeting with military officials, calling on all military officers to adhere to the Ministry of Defense's rules and principles for protecting the monarchy. The necessary work is to protect the nation and state institutions.
