Mexico's health authorities are trying to find out how three newborns were infected with the coronavirus, even though one of their parents tested positive for the virus.
Health authorities have called the case unprecedented.
Health authorities said the three babies, a girl and two boys, were tested four hours after the baby was seven and a half months old last week in the country's central San Luis Potosi state.
Initially, health authorities said their mother was believed to be carrying the virus without symptoms. But her tests later showed that neither she nor her father had been infected.
"The parents' test results were negative, which caught our attention," State Health Minister Monica Rangel told a press conference on Tuesday.
"We have asked especially since yesterday for experts to investigate the case," he said.
Two babies born on June 17 were in good health and had no symptoms of COVID-19, while doctors were treating the three babies, while the third had pneumonia but was in stable condition.
Rangel said the three babies will remain hospitalized and under observation.
Mexico has reported more than 190,000 cases of the coronavirus, with a total of 23,377 deaths, the seventh country with the highest number of deaths from the virus.from REUTERS
