A 15-year-old boy has become the latest victim of Bangladesh's controversial internet lawsuit after he was arrested for criticizing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.
Rights groups say the law has been used to silence dissent, with hundreds of people being charged since 2018 for crimes including defaming Ms. Hasina and other senior political figures.
Bhaluka police said on Wednesday that they arrested Mohammad Emon over the weekend after a local official from the ruling party claimed the teen had insulted our mother-like leader.
On the Facebook page, the teen wrote that out of 100 taka ($ 1.20) tax on a new phone, 25 to 35 taka had to be given to Sheikh Hasina in support of the widow because she did not have Husband no more.
Hasina's husband died in 2009.
Tofayel Ahammed, a local councilor who filed the case, said the teenager's comments had sparked domestic anger and that his parents were supporters of Bangladesh's Nationalist Party.
Meanwhile, local police chief Main Uddin said Emon later deleted the controversial Facebook post and wrote another apology.
However, the boy was sent to a correctional center, where he will have to reconsider and correct his behavior. from AFP
