There is initial evidence that the Covid vaccine has not been effective against the new strain of the virus that is exploding in the UK, with 37 cases so far, officials said.
Cases of the mutated virus, dubbed VUI-21JUL-01 or B.1.621, have been found in six parts of the UK, but most are in London. This is according to the British Public Health Service (PHE).
It was first discovered in Colombia in January, and officials in Miami recently said the virus covers about 10 percent of all cases there.
Officials are not sure about the mutation virus or the effectiveness of the vaccine against it, but there is no evidence that it is more contagious than the Delta virus.
Following the risk assessment, PHE says "there is preliminary laboratory evidence that previous vaccinations and infections may have been less effective in preventing VUI-21JUL-01 infection."
B.1.621 was identified as a mutated virus under investigation (VUI) on July 21 after the virus spread to several countries and revealed alarming mutations in proteins, including E484K, N501Y and K417N.
