Myanmar military asks for foreign help as Covid gets worse

Myanmar's military government is seeking help from the international community to fight the Covid-19 pandemic as the country struggles with a new wave of infections.

The country has been in turmoil since the military came to power in February, with many hospitals not well-equipped to cope with the growing number of patients after medical staff protested against the coup.

Military leader Min Aung Hlaing told a meeting on coordination to increase cooperation with the international community that Myanmar may seek funding from the Covid-19 Response Fund set up by ASEAN.

Meanwhile, the Global New Light of Myanmar reports that efforts are being made with ASEAN and other friendly countries.

Less than 5,000 new cases of Covid were reported on Wednesday, but analysts say the actual figure is likely to be much higher.

As of now, about 1.75 million people have been vaccinated out of a population of 54 million.
