Facebook in Myanmar shut down by military government

A Reddit report seen by TechCrunch says people will not be able to access Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp through MPT. MPT is the largest telecommunications operator in Myanmar, also partially state-owned.

By order, the government claims that Facebook has contributed to destabilizing the country.

A Facebook spokesperson told Engadget: "We know the current Facebook access is disrupted for some people. "We urge the authorities to restore connectivity so that people in Myanmar can stay in touch with family and friends and access important information."

Of Myanmar's more than 50 million people, about 27 million are Facebook users. According to the advocacy group Access Now, people are relying on the site to share information and organize things. The closure is scheduled to last until midnight on February 7.
