Preliminary analysis shows that the coronavirus vaccine can protect more than 90 percent of people from Covid-19 infection. The developers of Pfizer and BioNTech described it as a great day for science and humanity.
Their vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries and there are no safety concerns. Both companies plan to apply for immediate approval for the vaccine later this month. No vaccine has been on the list for such a short time.
There are still many big challenges ahead, but this announcement is warmly welcomed by scientists who hope that life may return to normal in the near future.
Data show that participants need three weeks to receive two doses of the vaccine. Tests in the United States, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and Turkey showed 90 percent protection, with results within seven days of a second vaccination.
However, the data presented are not final analysis as it is based on the first 94 volunteers to develop the Covid vaccine, so the exact effectiveness of the vaccine may change once the full results are analyzed.
