141 dead, millions missing in China floods

Chinese authorities issued more flood warnings for the Yangtze River on Friday, July 17, as heavy rains were forecast in the southern provinces. At least 141 people have been killed or missing and more than 2.2 million have been displaced by floods across southern China since June. The water level in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River continued to rise, the Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. The Yangtze River Water Commission on Thursday issued a "blue" flood warning, the lowest level for the Three Gorges Reservoir. The reservoir is more than 10 meters above its emergency level. Water inflow into the reservoir on Friday is expected to exceed 50,000 cubic meters per second.Higher "orange" flood warnings are still being issued for two major freshwater lakes along the Yangtze River. These are Dongting Lake in Hunan Province and Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province. The water level at a major hydrological station on the lake broke the 1998 record when more than 4,000 people died in the floods, Xinhua said.
