President Donald Trump withdrew from the war with Iran

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump withdrew from the war with Iran, saying that Tehran appeared to be weakening after launching an unprovoked attack on Iraqi-based American troops. Not dead.

In a televised address to his compatriots from the White House, Trump stressed that no American had been injured in a missile strike aimed at two bases.
While he promised immediate economic sanctions on Tehran, Trump welcomed the signs that the Islamic Republic appears to be weakening in the standoff.

The comments have eased fears that there will be an escalation of uncontrollable tensions after Trump ordered the killing of Iranian supremacist Qasem Soleimani on Friday.

However, the US president, who is facing charges in Congress and the November election, defended his attack target on a man who was seen as Iran's second most powerful official.

"Soleimani, the national hero in Iran, is the world's top terrorist and should be defeated long ago," Trump said.

Although Trump ended his speech with a call for peace, he insisted he would not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran's missiles targeted the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq and a base in Arbil that contained both US and foreign troops from the US-led coalition fighting Jihad group, Islamic State.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the missiles "a slap in the face".
