Really scary! Researchers find new species in deepest sea

The mothership website reports that researchers have successfully discovered a new species previously known as the Sea cockroach from deep sea in Indonesia after a mission to find out. Deep sea biodiversity off the coast of southern Java. They spotted a giant sea roach considered the 20th species in the Giant Isopod family.

The Deep Sea Biodiversity Exploration Mission has been underway since 2018, with a team of 31 researchers and a number of aid crews visiting the unseen deep sea area. Earlier, the 14-day exploration mission was led by Peter Ung, director of the Museum of Natural History, and Li Kong Jian of the National University of Singapore, leading the research team.

The research team is made up of several departments from the National Museum, including the NUS Science Group of Indonesia.

Researchers collected 12,000 living organisms from 63 locations, of which about 800 were previously encountered and only 12 were new.

A few years later, in July 2020, researchers unveiled a new species that was discovered on a global mission: the Isopod giant cockroach, or "Bathynomus raksasa" in scientific parlance.

Isopods are hard-shelled species similar to lobsters or crabs. The giant cockroach, some small and some large, is often found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, but this is the first time it has been found in the Indonesian Sea.
