Pictures were circulated on Facebook of Hindu idols being thrown on the streets. Newspapers in India were quick to point out that the idols were, in fact, not discarded, but were taken by Indians to float on rivers for religious worship.
According to India Today, the images scattered on the streets are the ones left after people took them to the river to pray. After the prayers, the idols floated across the river, so the authorities had to collect them from the river to keep the river clean and hygienic.
This interpretation is in response to the suggestion that the Indians have abandoned God and stopped praying because they could not protect themselves from the Covid 19 virus. However, the news in India has already reported that this is a misconception as Indians continue to worship Hindu gods.
